Its bring Spring 2004, the Lotus Elise is aptly poised for her new lease of life that would reinvigorate Lotus design cars into the 21st Century. Exterior design credits on the new car weren’t really necessary as the cars exterior changes were minimal, however all new models; each with a Toyota 2ZZ powertrain, revealed the S2 full potential, the results are outstanding.

Lotus undertook a thorough and exhaustive evaluation of a wide range of state-of-the-art engines. Toyota’s 2ZZ-GE 1.8 litre 4 cylinder 16-valve VVTL-i engine and C64 six-speed gearbox was chosen as an outstanding package, excellently suited to the Elise, The Toyota VVTL-i branded motor features both variable value timing and lift. The value timing boasts transient changing points, kicking in at 6,200rpm and out at any point down to 5,800rpm.

A bespoke exhaust system has been developed for the Elise 111R with the twin exhaust pipes exiting through the rear diffuser. Furthermore, the engine management system, bifurcated exhaust downpipe, and bespoke gearshift mechanism are designed and developed by Lotus, resulting in a power unit perfectly integrated with the Elise’s chassis and dynamics.

Benefiting from the 6 speed trans, featuring a 4 channel ABS anti-lock braking system. It modulated the hydraulic pressure in the AP Racing Twin piston front calipers and single Brembo rears, both clamping 282mm discs.
The 111R has a weight increase over K-Series of 3.1% and a power increase of 18.5% it was clearly an excellent move on behalf of lotus, along with the Toyota quality and durability reputation.

Distinguished by extra bulges in the bonnet (to house the brake servo) and a new rear splitter that includes the centrally mounted twin exhaust pipes. There's no doubt this one of the best Lotus Elise.
