Austin Healey 3000 Mk II
Austin Healey 3000
The Austin Healey 3000 is indeed a British marque, built between 1958 and 67, and is the best known of the ‘big’ Healey models. The slimline bodywork was made by Jensen Motors and then assembled at the BMC Abingdon works. Yes, in Britain. The car was built and assembled in Britain. That alone should have you hankering for a drive.
The Austin Healey 3000 Mark II (introduced March 1961) came with three SU HS4 carburetors and an upgraded camshaft, known as the BT7 Mark II (four seat version) and BN7 Mark II (two seat version). However, with the introduction of the BJ7 (2 +2 seats) in January 1962, the number of carburetors was reduced to 2 (SU type HS), due to the balance problems with 3 carburetors.
With the introduction of the BJ7, the BN7 Mark II was discontinued in March 1962, the BT7 Mark II followed in June 1962. The main changes with the BJ7 were a vertical barred grille, wind-up windows, an improved hood, and a wrap- around windshield. Optional extras were similar to the Mark I, although the option of a factory hardtop was not available with the introduction of the BJ7. From August 1961 a brake booster was also available as an optional extra. With the introduction of the Austin Healey 3000 Mark III, the BJ7 was discontinued in October 1963.

The Healey is a car built for a generation of drivers that were taught to drive a vehicle, manage engine and gear control, and understand how to not get blindsided, not answer a list of benign questions and reverse park in a cul-de-sac.
There are some basics, such as how to manage the gears, as the Healy has no synchromesh in first. This means that the goal of approaching a roundabout or lights is to allow the car to roll in second, rather than coming to a complete stop.
I was always taught by my uncle Brian that a good driver should anticipate the road conditions and traffic and should not need to brake sharply or come to a complete halt, unless completely necessarily. Even my grandmother proudly informed me that she could double declutch. “Instead of pushing the clutch in once and shifting directly into another gear,” she said “the driver first engages the transmission in neutral before shifting to the next gear. The clutch is pressed and released with each change”. I looked at her blankly for a moment before nodding, completely perplexed.
Driving a classic car has obvious charm, but with the sun beating down, the roof off and the open road ahead, it becomes one of life’s pleasure.. One of the unspoken rules that you may miss: British classic car drivers come out on the weekend, so many people will throw you a gesture in their cars as they pass. Nod back or wave.
Also, people will approach you at the petrol pump, in the street, and anywhere else you arrive with the Healy. They will ask you about the car, this is not just a car – this is a lifestyle.
The Austin Healey 3000 has be driven and still is by some rather known names, the likes of
Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Harrison Ford, Barry Sheene, Jonny Deep…. So if its good enough for them?!
